COLIN BURN

Australian artist Colin Burn is a self-confessed provocateur, he likes to incite conversation and challenge accepted traditions and values within society. He also likes to observe and bring focus to subjects that are often hidden in plain sight. His conceptual works have a strong focus on symbolism and beautification, creating unique art of everyday items with opulent materials that draw the audience attention towards the art. He often uses authentic value as the symbolism within sculptural allegories, that house much deeper meanings. In a world that’s become so busy that it’s hard to be seen, his application of this opulent medium is a very big “hey you look over here” way of gaining attention to his art and its message. Not frightened to challenge the norm he is deeply inspired by artists like Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol, who in his opinion have completely transformed the contemporary art world. Hirst’s comment “if it’s in a gallery it’s art” was truly inspirational for Burn when creating his opulent erotic, dildo sculptures as serious and valuable works of contemporary art. Burn is a believer in original concepts and enjoys the avant-garde, he would rather cut a path and be hit with the branches, than to follow in others footsteps. This concept is forever on his mind when he is conceiving new ideas for his unique and original artworks. Crafting fine jewelry for over three decades and living the life of a genuine alchemist, his favorite mediums are the world’s finest diamonds, gems and precious metals. Over the years his creative jewelry works have received awards and recognition from the Australian and Japanese governments as well a leading Australian sporting groups, helping him forge a successful career servicing a global audience of appreciative clients. In 2004 Burn commenced an artistic journey crafting erotic jewelry pieces, capturing deeply emotive elements within these highly provocative works. During this period, he was spending a great deal of his time in Japan and South East Asia, which led to these works being influenced from his observation of diverse cultures and human practice. Burn enjoys taking provocative objects to abstract and luxurious levels never before seen. He believes jewelry and art share a unique bond having meaningful and emotional impacts on people lives, he states “while it could be argued that no one really needs jewelry or art, our emotions tell us otherwise.” Having experienced and enjoyed a comprehensive 35-year career across all areas of fine jewelry making, Burn is now solely focused on creating his unique and luxurious contemporary artworks which to date have been exhibited in Perth, Tokyo and Beverly Hills.
